Happy birthday to me!

On the 24th of September I finally turned 25 years of age..
My wish -as i'm about the blow out the candles- is actually a wish for me..
that Mic and me last forever.. :)
(oh, and winning the lottory off course! :P)

My Mic surprised me with a ... weekend away to De Haan! :D
We went for 4 days to Sunparks.. (and yes, i have been there before)
It was really the best present I ever got. (next to the ring I got last year :) )
Finally a place of our own, so calm..
The swimming pool was just the best.. I remembered my time in that pool when I was only 8 or 9 years old and we went on our fieldtrip with class to Sunparks :D

We did lots of things :)
Swimming, golfing, going to Ostend, eating at El Mariachi (our favorite Mexian restaurant), went to see the movie: 'Dinner with Schmuks'.. (with only 3 euros to pay), went to the Arcade in Ostende and lost the carrace to Michael :S
Went minigolfing.. and was a bit jalous of Michael b/c he was winning (again!)
just relaxing at our place.. a beautiful villa..
Ate take-away Pizza from the Pizzahut.. (our favorite Pizza restaurant!)
Mic even cooked dinner on sunday.. (my favorite chef cook :))
we even watched tv :) (and offcourse many more) :)
Lovely.. wished it never ended, but unfortunatly..
And now.. back on the diet. :P

Diving with mic..

Dear Blog,

On Friday we took of for a lovely weekends in the 'Ardennes'.
Last weekend (from 18 till the 19th of september), I went away with Mic. It was a weekend filled with diving, cos Mic went there (not only with me) with his club called the Manta.. (http://www.demanta.be/).. this is a diving club from Ghent, that Mic absolutly loves! :P.. It started on friday, and we arrived at 7ish in Brûly-De-Pesche. Somewhere on the bottom of Belgium (in the state of Namen) There are a lot of diving spots over there.. so 4 dives were possible for Mic and the team, not all on the same locations :)
About our Sleeping place :)
This Gite is called: 'Gite d' Etape'. And was in fact an old school transformed in little hotel.. A kind of hotel you have to do your own cooking and cleaning off course.
The surroundings of this place was very calm and peaceful. A bit cold, but quite good. The sleeping accomodations were only consisted of twinbeds! (you know, beds on each other) They were quite nice, although we didn't got much sleep :p. We had to share our room with another couple from Ghent, nice couple. One of them was a diver as well. In the neighbourhood you could find: 'L'abri de Hitler', some kind of bunker from the worldwar.. The woods surrounding were also very enjoyable, as we wondered and walked in the woods we could find various kinds of mushrooms! Really! It was really lovely to see.

On Saturday:
One of the locations we've been, is called: 'Lac de L'eau d'heure', Platte Taille'.. I have been here before with Mic's other divingclub (Zeeroos) and we spend one dive over there. Mostly it's only half an hour the divers go under water.. so it's really not that boring.. (only when it's cold, the time can really last forever).. there were quite some things to see.. interesting and beautiful things
. (http://www.duiklokaties.com/Duiklokatie.php?id=12)
We ate lunch there and head of to 'La Croisette' a stonegrove a few kilometers from our place. The water was really beautiful over there.. you could see very clearly, and I was really intrigued by those divers under water.. I even thought I spotted Michael under there, but there was some kind of traffic jam under there, cos there were a lot of divers, and all of them wore the same suit, had the same flippers and even the same colour of divingbottle.. quite confusing, but in half an hour...
Mic had to do a test the divers call it: 'DivingGuiding': He just had to guide another diver.. (ofcourse one of his instructors..) under the water and check everything like safety and swimming and whatever they have to do :D.. This 2 times he did well, his instructors were very happy with the way he did stuff, so he passed with flying collars.. Good job Mic! He does have to do one other test and he can become a 2 star diver!.. (i'm not sure what it really means.. I think he then can go beneath the restriction of 20 meters..) I'm a right? Have to check that one..:
That night we had a really lovely dinner.. made by chef Diver! Very tasty :).. we got to our beds very early.. we were beat.

I checked the thing with the diving and the stars they need to earn. (sorry dutch!)
From Nelos:
¨1*-Duiker (duiker 1 ster CMAS) - Elementaire duiker
¨2*-Duiker (duiker 2 sterren CMAS) - Elementaire duikleider (That's Mic running for!)
¨3*-Duiker (duiker 3 sterren CMAS) - Duikleider
¨4*-Duiker (duiker 4 sterren CMAS) - Algemeen duikleider
¨Assistent Instructeur (AI)
¨drie Instructeurtitels (1 - 2 - 3ster)

Just like chinese to me.
On Sunday:
The next day we allready had to pack.. cos we needed to leave at 10.. This time we headed for 'Vodelee', (http://www.duiklokaties.com/Duiklokatie.php?id=4), Mic could dive 2 times here. It was again a rather small place, (croisette was smaller I think). Still it was a lovely site to see and Mic enjoyed himself over there.. He and I had a great time. I even enjoyed it too, especially with that great weather we had! :)
And all of Mic's collegues had the same question, when will I start diving!? Hmm.. now i'm not sure about that yet.. The thing is, in my younger years I would have love to do this.. I would love to see the Great Barrier reef sometimes and dive etc etc.. but now i've grown, I'm a bit hesitated by it.. It's quite expensive to buy everything.. and the big factor.. It's soooo COLD! now... i'm really a wimp aren't I.. yes.. I think so too. If I ever move to Australia.. then absolutly definetly and almost as quickly as I can :).. Not now. And if I ever get to the diving thing.. I must have a photocamera with me :).. wow.. I need to win the lottory SOON!

This was our weekend! :D

Cas de Vodelee.

Killerwhales in captivity..

The Orca's of Marineland Antibes.

Dear Blog

After our little adventure at Marineland, I wondered how many killerwhales in captivity there are.. With a little help of internet I sought some information about it..

Just to clarify, i'm not a big fan of killerwhales in captivity. It's just sad actually, I learned at marineworld: their 'training' is actually something they have to DO, because the killerwhales could be bored, go sad an die eventually. They have to have their brains trained, to compensate the stuff they would do in the wild, but cannot do cos they are in captivity. I never knew that. And i'm not sure if it's really true, but it had some logic though. Orca's are smarter than us, okay, they can't talk (like us in words) but there very intelligent and their brains works much more then ours. The trainers also said, no show is like the other, it's always different. (And I saw that too) not to have the same things over and over again.. they have to be challenged, every time.

So, here is my list of killerwhales in captivity (that are still alive):
Too know how many killerwhales there are, you have to know how many zoo/marinelands there are. Quite alot!
With thanks to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keet#Keet) and this site: http://www.orcahome.de/orcastat.htm I found much information.

- Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium Japan: (1 killerwhale)

  1. Nami: female 28 years (1985*), captured in Japan.

So.. in general, there are 41 killerwhales kept in capitivy. They are still alive, yet 195 orca's died in captivity, during the progress of capturing them, or died during complications at birth, ilnesses, diseases and so on.. that's really sad.. 195 kills. Unneccesary kills.

On the site mentioned on top, there are lots of pictures of every individual whale. It's the most informative site too find about 'killerwhales in captivity'.. this reminds me of somthing in Marineland, the trainer said a thing about theire new polar bears, he said, there is someone in the whole wide world who knows every polar bear in captivity, and decides how to breed, and where they have to be placed. There must be someone with the knowledge of killerwhales too, must be the person of this site or perhaps someone else :). If that person is retiring soon, I could replace him/her immidiatly! Thinks this could be a cool job, if you ask me.

Facts about Marineland what I also didn't know and learned at the VIPTour! :D

  • There are 4 killerwhales in marineland, a female Freya (about 20 years old? i'm not sure), then a male (Freya's son) Valentin who is almost the grownup, then another male Inouk, and another female Wikie. (the youngest). There is a very strict hierarchy in the orca world, Freya, the eldest is the 'boss' of the group. She is (as I understand it) the most grumpy one :P, she can easily tell the others of the group to not do a show, so, there could be no show, cos Freya wants that.
  • The second in row to be the next 'boss', is always the female, so in this case this will be 'Wikie', even though she is the youngest of the 'children' of the group.. quite funny hé?
  • There are so many handgestures to learn to these whales, as in difference with a dolphin, a killerwhale can do much more movements combined. So they have to do a couple of movements in the sametime of after eachother, another thing I didn't know about.. So dolphins do have less handgestures to see then killerwhales! It was quite impressive how many gestures the trainers did to do a couple of movements :)
  • One of the shows was quite shorter then the others, at the end you could see the trainers wanted the killerwhales to jump out of the water, in 3 different places (and even spouting water out) but you could notice they didn't do it, (or do it properly), the show ended quite abruptly and the trainers just went away, leaving the killerwhales no fish, and definitly no words our gestures they did good.. the killerwhales really picked it up and were left alone, you could see they didn't like that! After the people went away, I stayed.. (off course :P) and the trainers came back, you could clearly see there were not happy with the situation, as the killerwhales were/did wrong. You could see there turning their heads as saying 'NO' our even pushing them away! Wow, talk about tough love :P.. but that's consequent hé. After they asked again, the killerwhales didn't hesitated and did what the trainers wanted. They jumped simultanesly out of the water, around the bassin. Wow, quite impressive to see! :) They listen really good.
  • One of the zookeepers mentioned about the accident that happend at Seaworld in February of this year: (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2010/02/24/2010-02-24_killer_whale_kills_trainer_at_orlandos_sea_world.html) and they said about this certain killerwhale (Tillikum) he already had killed before. But why? He answered with this peticular whale, he was not used to persons getting into the water, (as others are used to contact with humans under water, but this whale didnt had). During a show 'Dining with Shamu' (You can do this too in Marineland btw) her long hair, at one point was into the water, as the killerwhale didnt know what it was, he tought his trainer wanted to PLAY with him, under the water.. so he dragged her under water as he wanted to play with her. But unfortunatly she drowned of this action.. thats what the guy of Marineland said to us. Is it true? The deceased trainer can't react no more! :S.. wow, the power of nature.. and I heard a couple of times being a trainer is a dangerous job.. (but wait, even teaching is quite dangerous too!) An unfortunate accident. But it learns us that you cannot trust a whale as you can (sometimes) trust a human. As of this accident of feb2010, there has been a law ever since, no trainer may not go into the water with a killerwhale during shows. This 'contact in the water' was ended from then on. Only in training sessions the trainer can go step by step back into the water again.
  • At the end, the trainers came to us to have questions explained to us.. So yeah, I had a couple of questions, such as, do they ever stop training. As the answer was quite logical: No. :P
  • I learned quite a lot :D.. They even explained how to recognise the whales Freya, Valentin, Wikie and Inouk, I can only remember Wikie (the youngest female to still have her perfect dorsal fin but the smallest whale), Freya (the eldest female, has a crooked dorsal finn, slightly going to the side) Valentin (the eldest male, almost a grown-up with a crooked dorsal fin thats not straight anymore, and you know, the dorsal fin of a male is always much larger) and Inouk, I can't remember unfortunatly, but it still was a quite perfect one.. sorry if I may be mistaken :)

(*) Not nessicerely born on this day, captured in this year.

My best pictures of Killer whales at Marineland Antibes!

Trip to the Provence pt 2

Dear Blog..
The second part of our trip to the Provence..

First of all, I forgot to mention in the last post, that we went swimming in the ocean too! On the day we went to 'Aigues Mortes', we drived further to 'Set', a small little village next to the Region of the provence.. The parkingspaces were very close to the ocean, so we could almost jump into it!.. The water was soooo cold! (for my standards that is..) but when I got used to it, it was okay.. There were big waves as the weather was changin a bit.. There were more clouds and after an hour we left Set.. But still, Mic swam very far and even very long under the water.. (I was a bit anxious though).. He even managed to bring me back a lovely shell which still had a little creature in it. Unfortunatly it died quite fast... It was really a long time ago I went into 'Ocean water' as it is very salty.. The salt in my mouth was a total surprise, it was almost 10 years ago I even went swimming in an ocean, so yeah.. it was quite surprising.. Thankfully there werent any jellyfish, I hate them jellyfish! Yikes..

Then.. when we finally left 'Noves'.. for Annot (bout 4 hours and more drive normally) we decided to ride to our next destination next to the coastline.... We even drived through 'Marseille', a huge city! And it was a bit too crowded so we fast got out of there.. When we saw we did too much time doing the coastline, we then went through land to Annot.. and somewhere in the afternoon we got there. Annot is situated in Alpes de Haute and is one of the other regions of the provence.. (in the North East somewhere)

The camping was called 'La Ribiere' and is located near Annot, a small little townsvillage.. The camping was a 2** camping. Not having a pool, but next to a small lake ... http://www.la-ribiere.com/
Annot and the region itself is quite rocky and there are a lot of mountains, so much different then Noves.. And the best thing, no Cigals or bugs whatsoever!
Just calm and quiet little place.. The owner was very kind and helpfull and we got our spot (unfortunatly in full sunlight with not (mucht) shade, but no biggie, as we werent staying for days on the camping and just riding around during the day.
The best thing about this camping was:
- hot showers!!!!!

- very good rules on the sanitary and the toilets and showers etc..!
- the gardens were kept nice very good..
- good pizzas.
- refreshing little river next to camping, we could even swim in it! But it was sooo cold!

We had to pay 30 euro's via Paypal (60 in my case.. ) and had to pay about 40 or a bit more for the rest of our stay. It was about 16,50 euros per night, for 2 persons/1tent and 1 car.
We had some lovely weather.. Ahh.. it was soo good! :)
Actually we didn't do to much in that region, cos we already done soo much. But still we did a few things, what i'm going to sum up.
  • Digne les bains: Huge markets with lots of stuff! Nice souvenireshops..
  • Les Penitens de Mées: Actually this is a Rockformation that's 2km long. I'ts some kind of pointy rocks next to eachother. Lovely to see, that's it.
  • Sisteron: woow! Lovely city, there are a couple of cities located on top of mountains here, bus Sisteron is the niciets one. This is a very romantic place :D
  • Lake Castillon: We passed a lovely lake a couple of times before we went closer to the 'beach', looks like this was some gorgeous blue water we could even swim in! And offcourse we did! We went there a couple of times, to work on our tans too :P (and no kidding, I burned myself quite badly from the first time there!) We rented a pedalo and went around the island floating there :D It was soo good! I sure wanna go back there! It was crowded every time went there. http://www.provenceweb.fr/e/groupes/verdon/lac4.htmLook at that blue water! :D
  • Castelane: a very crowded city! The first time we went there, there was no space whatsoever! The second time, we had more luck. I bought a very lovely souvenir for me, my mother and brother! It was in this shop where they selled poterie, made of this kind of clay only find in that region! I was really into it, as I thought it was really beautiful, even Mic buyed a vinegar bottle (I think it was) http://www.castellaneverdon.com/index.html. Castelane was actually the beginning point of the 'Gorges Du Verdon', a route into the mountains of Verdon (about 113 kms long) and with great sights! We stopped a couple of times to get the niciest picture!
The beginning of the Verdon (the river that crosses the Gorges)
  • Gorges Du Verdon: Wikipedia says it's the biggest canyon of Europe, and the second biggest of the world! (right after the 'Grand Canyon' from the USA).. we did the tour with our car, and thats really the best way too do it. It's long, starts in castelane and takes you to 'Moustiers ST Marie'. The mountains, the lake that goes acrosse it. It's really magnificent! The curves around the mountains are sometimes a bit dangerous, so watch out. If you want, you can even do some bungeejumping! Really! On our way, we found a large crowd on one of the bridges and they were bungeejumping.. brrr..! frightening! I could never do that!
  • High in the mountains!
  • Moustiers Sainte Marie: Yeah.. that was the farest point of the Gorges, it was a really lovely city, with lots of history and is famously known for it's star that's hanging between 2 rocks (something to do with crusaders who had put it there sometime ago..) ahwell, it was just lovely! We also saw a lot of 'faience' pottery, famous for this region (but really expensive).. I would really recommend this route, it was gorgeous and took almost a day to do it.
  • Antibes: yeaaaah!!!!!! Marineland is located in Antibes!! We got there very early (got to wake up at 6 in the morning) and drove about 2 hours to the coast, to Antibes. Yeah! We did the VIP tour in Marineland, a tour 'after the curtains'. We were in a group of 10 and there even was another Belgian couple with us! We saw a lot of things, we heared a lot of things and got to ask questions at the zookeeper... We then got the chance to do some tricks with the sealions (even in the water) and I got to touch a dolphin!!!! :D whaa :) that was really awesome!!! http://www.marineland.fr/. We got our breakfast (and stupid me forgot my rings on the dolphin site, so.. this always happens to me! We met with a lovely Dutch girl, who was training to be an orcatrainer as well!! (I was sooo envious!) and got the chance to be soooo close the the bassin of the killerwhales (even during the show) My camera was on the whole time! I even got a wee bit emotional, as this was my dream to see a killerwhale for real.. really had to fight against my tears :).. I then saw all the shows the rest of the day and did a lot of shopping (so many killerwhale things!) and walked around.. it was really crowded.. Marineland is actually one of the 4 themeparks around Antibes, and almost lying next to each other.. We stayed at Marineland till 11oclock, grabed something at the Quick and it took about an hour to get back to our camping.. aaah... what a day! I recommend the VIP tour to everyone!! Except, it's very expensive.. it's about 169 euro's (but totally worth it!) and it's only for people about 12 was it? (or at least for persons over 1meter and a bit..) I really loved the killerwhales, they are soo gorgeous.. I just love them.. After the second show Mic came to a conclusion the killerwhales only had about 5 bassins (aquarium) for them to live in and thought that was quite sad.. I thought that too eventually.. ah well, luckely there aren't any more killerwhales catched to stick in seaworlds or marinelands.. Except the Dutch trainer mentioned about the killerwhale found in the Netherlands: she thinks it will be trained eventually, cos it was starving at the time they found him, the fed her and nurished her and she probably will come to Marineland.. I recommend Marineland, as it is the one and only parc/zoo that has 4 killerwhales. And I got on picture with them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D whiee.. now next is going to Vancouver Island to see them in real nature :)

The next days (only 3 days left) we really didn't do nothing much. Going around, went to the city, went to the restaurant and gone to the local market en a couple of times to Lac Castillon.. This was really a very good destination and I loved it too bits! On our route back we had some trafficjams as there were a lot of accidents. When we got home, we had to get used to our normal lives again.. ooh!! too bad.. I want to go back. :)

This was my review of our holiday at the Provence... hope you liked it! :) My picture can be found at:
